I am available to discuss these programs with you, and help you develop a “Real World Learning” experience for your students and children.
I will attempt to post some podcasts that you can use in the classroom as well as at home in order to supplement your student’s/children’s learning about career development.
You can contact me directly via email at roberto.bonefont@dcboces.org or at my office, 845.486.8001, ext. 307.
At CTI, our belief is that your child or student can be “Work Ready and College Bound”… please let us convince you that this is possible and a very real and easy goal to achieve.
Remember…”Work-Based Learning Pays!”
Mr. Roberto Bonefont, Sr., Coordinator of Work-Based Learning Programs

Mr. Bonefont, Coordinator of Work-Based Learning Programs and a Retired Air Force Veteran and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 170 in Poughkeepsie, addresses the students and honored guests about the meaning of “sacrifice” and “service” to country. He thanked the military recruiters for their service to our students and praised their leadership in supporting education in Dutchess County.

Mr. Mitchell Shron, CTI Principal welcomes everyone and thanks them for their participation in CTI activities.

Probably not known by many, is that the military recruiters also get involved with many school activities, without specifically recruiting for military positions. They proctor our ASVAB Career Exploration Program testing, which allows students to take this well known aptitude test without committing to any promise of military service.
The recruiters participate in our annual field day to help support the Skills USA fund drive for the state and national competitions. During the breakfast, the Skills USA Officers offered a special patriotic tribute to the military recruiters and Dutchess Boces Employees who are Veterans and presented them with a token of appreciation donated by Ms. Veronica Heller, Secretary to the Principal.

Several were in attendance, including Mr. Lou Wood, a Coast Guard Veteran who served during the Vietnam War, and was a permanent substitute teacher at CTI; also present were Mr. Michael Kelly, Security and Law Enforcement Instructor, and an Air Force Veteran, and recruiters from the Navy, Air Force, Army and Marines. Several other invited guests who came to represent their family members were Mrs. Joan McMahon, representing her husband who is a Navy Veteran, and Mr. Bob Butler, representing his father, the late Mr. Robert Butler, Sr., who was an Air Force Veteran, who served during the Korean War and was an honored guest instructor at CTI.

After a brief introduction, the invited Veterans recited the Pledge of Allegiance and held a moment of silence to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Mr. Mitchell Shron, CTI Principal, welcomed the Veterans and guests and thanked them for their service and their important part as “role models” for our students.

Oorah!! Marine Recruiters looking sharp!

Skills USA Officer Victoria and Chef Darcy Sala share a moment.
=================================================
After breakfast, the recruiters and Veterans in attendance enjoyed some time with the USA Skills students and were introduced to the culinary class who prepared a wonderful breakfast for everyone. Chef Darcy Sala and Chef Dan Tierney and the students from the senior culinary classes, organized the breakfast fare and provided a wonderful breaking setting for our military recruiters and Veterans.

On Thursday, October 12th, the students at the Career and Technical Institute (CTI) had the opportunity to participate in a small “College and Technical Education Fair,” several local universities and regional technical schools and local military recruiters provided registration and financial aid information to students who are interested in pursuing post-secondary and advanced technical education or military vocational training. CTI students are highly encouraged to develop career plans using career assessment tools available through the New York State Education CareerZone website www.nycareerzone.org.
What is CareerZone?
CareerZone is a free, career exploration and planning system designed especially for New York State students. The CareerZone website brings together multiple sources of career and labor market information to make career exploration and planning for the future a little easier. The CareerZone system is a product of the New York State Department of Labor and is currently hosted by AT&T. The CareerZone System harnesses the power of the Internet to provide information on 900 occupations from the new O*NET Database, the latest labor market information from the NYS Department of Labor and interactive career portfolios for middle and high school students that connect to the NYS Education Department Career Plan initiative. Links to college exploration and planning resources help students begin their journey and 300 career videos provide a visual glimpse into the workplace. CareerZone also provides access to up-to-date job postings and basic job preparation tools such as a resume builder, reference list maker and cover letter application.
Students also had the chance to speak with a representative from the ASVAB Career Exploration Program (www.asvabprogram.com), Ms. Susan Anderson. The ASVAB Career Exploration Program is a comprehensive career exploration and planning program that includes a multiple-aptitude test battery, an interest inventory, and various career planning tools designed to help you explore the world of work. Traditionally the ASVAB has been and is still being used by the military to assess potential new recruits for placement in specifically qualified jobs. Now the ASVAB is available to all students who are interested in career planning, without any obligation to the military recruiting services. Mr. Roberto Bonefont, Sr., Coordinator of Work-Based Learning Programs at CTI promotes career assessment testing and developing the research skills needed to be successful in post-secondary education or in the world of work. There will be another “Fair” in February 2007 concentrating on Trade based skills for advanced technical training for our students. For further information on upcoming events or career planning contact Mr. Bonefont at 845-486-8001 at the Career Development Office.
